Revolted

Revolted

We’ve been hearing and talking a lot about revolt in our Church lately. Unless you get angry at your persisting problem and do something about it, it’s never sorted. Unfortunately, many of us only get angry at the situation and don’t do anything, instead, we like to complain and get sympathy from others.

When I look at some of the women of the Bible who experienced a miracle in their lives, I see revolt, though at first, all one can see is a mistake.

Sarah grew tired of waiting to bear Abraham a child and instead of accepting life as it was, took her ‘best’ servant (that’s what she thought at the time) Hagar and gave her to her husband so he could sleep with her and give birth for them. Sure at that time, men had many wives, but Abraham wasn’t like other men... Abraham had been faithful to Sarah all their lives, despite the fact that she was barren. Now I ask, what kind of wife, who’s married to such a committed man, would ever give another woman to him in order to have his children?

A revolted wife.

Rebecca had an assurance from God inside of her that Jacob, her younger son (seconds younger), was God’s chosen and yet her husband Isaac didn’t think so and wanted to bless their older son Esau, who seemed to be more brave and courageous to be the head of the family in the time of his death. Rebecca foresaw a great mistake and instead of nagging Isaac about it, she deceived him into believing that Jacob was Esau, and so he blessed the wrong son. What kind of a lovely wife would do that to her dying husband?

A revolted wife and mother.

Jochebed had just had a beautiful child named Moses and heard the Egyptians were out killing all the babies. She decided her son was going to live no matter what, even if that meant placing him inside a basket and throwing him in the river. If he died, it wouldn’t have been by the Egyptians’ hands. What kind of a mother would do that to her child?

A revolted mother.

All of these women did something out of their revolt and at first, it looked like a terrible mistake. They had terrible consequences. But because of their faith in not accepting their problem and doing something about it, God honored them for it.

Sarah did have her own child, Isaac, even at an old age.

Rebecca’s younger son Jacob was God’s chosen and did need his father’s blessing to eventually become Israel.

Jochebed’s son, Moses, did survive and grew to set the Israelites free from slavery in Egypt.
